WHAT IS THE MISSION?
The Great Lakes Mission is a long-term open-water endurance project designed to cross Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario through a series of staged swim missions.
Each lake is its own expedition chapter, with dedicated preparation, route development, safety planning, navigation, recovery and documentation.
Routes, stage lengths and operating windows will be shaped by readiness, funding, weather, water conditions and logistics rather than fixed too early.
Prepare seriously. Document honestly. Adapt to reality.
WHY THE GREAT LAKES?
The Great Lakes are connected, but they are not the same. Scale, cold water, wind, waves, visibility, geography and weather create five distinct endurance environments.
Each lake demands its own preparation, its own respect, its own strategy and its own story.
SCALE & EXPOSURE
Distance is only one variable. Cold, isolation and long periods of exposure shape the mission.
FIVE DIFFERENT SYSTEMS
Every lake brings different geography, weather patterns and operational demands.
REAL CONDITIONS
The plan must guide the mission and still be flexible enough to change when reality requires it.
HOW THE STAGED END-TO-END SWIM WORKS
Each lake is completed through multiple swim stages. Every new stage is intended to continue from the point where the previous stage ended, so the individual swims build one documented route across the lake.
01 · STAGE BY STAGE
Multiple swim stages replace a single nonstop crossing.
02 · CONTINUOUS ROUTE
Each stage resumes from the previous endpoint.
03 · DOCUMENTED
GPS positions and mission records document progression.
04 · CONDITIONS LEAD
Weather, safety, navigation and recovery decide what is responsible.
Adaptability is not a weakness in the plan. It is part of responsible expedition planning.
PREPARATION · SAFETY · MENTAL PERFORMANCE
A Great Lakes endurance swim demands more than physical capacity. Courage and responsibility belong together.
PREPARATION
Training, route development, equipment, logistics, recovery and team systems come before ambition becomes action.
SAFETY
Go / no-go decisions, navigation, communication and medical readiness are part of the mission, not obstacles to it.
MENTAL PERFORMANCE
The challenge is to remain clear, adaptable and responsible when fatigue, uncertainty and pressure make good decisions harder.
WHAT IS TRULY IMPOSSIBLE?
The mission does not begin with the claim that everything is possible.
It begins with a question: which limits are real — and which assumptions deserve to be tested?
Cold water remains cold. Weather changes. Fatigue accumulates. Safety matters. Decisions have consequences.
THE FIVE LAKES ROADMAP
Five lakes. Five expedition chapters. One long-term endurance journey.
2027 · Mission One — Lake Superior
2028 · Mission Two — Lake Michigan
2029 · Mission Three — Lake Huron
2030 · Mission Four — Lake Erie
2031 · Mission Five — Lake Ontario
The sequence is clear. Exact launch windows remain subject to readiness, funding, safety systems, weather and the operating conditions required for each lake.
THE MISSION BEYOND THE SWIM
The sporting mission creates attention. Swim Against Cancer gives part of that attention a social purpose: supporting mental strength, courage, confidence and inner stability for children facing cancer and the families standing beside them.
The focus is not on replacing medicine or making promises about healing. The sporting mission, mission financing and charitable purpose remain clearly separated.
